Articles: Favicon"A favicon (short for 'favorites icon'), also known as a page icon or an urlicon, is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage. A web designer can create such an icon, and many recent web browsers can then make use of them. Browsers that support favicons may display them in the browser's URL bar, next to the site's name in lists of bookmarks, and next to the page's title in a tabbed document interface." (source)This is the definition some user at Wikipedia made. I don't want to explain the functions of Favigons exactly, but I want to explain to you how to make and install them. All you need is a basic experience in html and an program to build *.ico-files. 01. Open your graphic program (e.g. Adobe Photoshop) and create your favicon. Make sure your favicon is squarish (I always make a favicon of 32x32px). You also maybe create a transparent background, because of the differences of diverse browsers. (Grieved-Lightness' favicon has a white background - #ffffff). 02. Save your favicon and pay attention to the compatibility of image-files, relating to the icon-program. 03. If you want to make your Favicons in the same way as I do you need to take the same program to create them. I use the program Irfanview. It's freeware and easy to work with. You download this program at it's official website or at HERE at Grieved-Lightness. 04. Open your premade Favicon in Irfanview (File »Open) and save it (File » Save as ...). There're two new popups. At the big one you have to use the location where to save your Favicon. Make sure you save your icon as a ICO - Windows Icon file. In the smaller popup you can change some details. Don't change the default settings, unsless your icon has a transparent background. Make sure you take the highest grade of quality. 05. Open your index-file of your website, now. Have a look at the head-part and paste in the code below under the title-line: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="yourfavicon.ico" type="image/ico"> |
