Photoshop tutorials: Icon tutorial #1

A few month ago I started making more icons and avatars. Some of you realised that and wanted to get to know a few skills. That's why I made this tutorial to show one of the basic skills.

1. Took your chosen image and scale it down into 100x100px. Dublicate the layer and be sure that the backgroundcolour is white (#FFFFFF). Mark the layer with your image and go to Filter » Sharper » Sharpen. Make this one or two times (Strg+F) until you think it's good enough :) (I made it three times)

2. If you followed my introduction your result should be look like the image at the left side. Now we want to work at the colour. Make a new layer and fill it with a dark blue colour (I took #000339). Set the blending mode of this layer on exclusion. Now we have to make the two layers (the layer with the image and the layer with the blue colour) become one. To do this go on the upper layer and push Strg+E. Go to the tools bar and choose the erazor. Be sure that the mode is “brushes”. Now have a right clck and choose you brush (I took a brush made by 77words). Go the bottom of the icon and delete it with your brush. (Maybe do the same with the top of the icon)

3. Now it should look like the image on your left and we have to decorate. I dublicated the image and put white diagonal scanlines on the upper layer. Then I set the blending mode at softlight. The opacity I set down at 30%. That’s all !!!!
